Cloud computing is a hot topic in today's IT industry, with several cloud computing solutions currently offered by the commercial and open source community. However, most of these solutions revolve around x86_64 and VMware/KVM/Hyper-V. xCAT (Extreme Cloud Administration Toolkit) is the first open-source cloud solution that supports System z and z/VM. Moreover, it is the only open-source solution supporting IBM System x, p, and z - leveraging years of systems management best practices and experience to make it as usable as it is powerful. 1:00 PM | Mike MacIssac - IBM - Mz a new open source systems management package
"Mz" (Managing z) is an experimental, lightweight set of Linux bash scripts that provide both a command line and Web interface for systems management of z/VM and Linux. These scripts work well between LPARs and CECs. The package was recently "open-sourced" and is available for free download. This presentation will describe the solution in detail, and, network-permitting, show a live demonstration.

Len Santalucia - Vicom Infinity, INC. - Effective IT Optimization with IBM System z Consolidation, Cloud, Analytics
In 1999 Linux on System z was just getting started and was also struggling to be accepted in the marketplace. Linux on System z/VM supported only SAMBA, DNS, Apache, and limited ISV and IBM software. Today, Linux on System z/VM has advanced remarkably and is growing in the marketplace at an exponential rate. The System z Linux Advisory Council has grown to over 160 members from its meager start of only 4 clients. There are many customer references as well as many IBM and ISV software solutions. This presentation will provide insights and many scenarios on how Linux on System z/VM earned its present status from a business, technical, and financial perspective and why it has such a bright future. |
