This MVMUA has sessions on the nuts and bolts of supporting and networking your VM system, plus sessions on the new technologies to exploit your VM system's strengths. Speakers from IBM will discuss the Service Update facility, which lets you order and receive system service via the Internet, plus the features and use of the latest versions of TCP/IP and RSCS. These sessions are presented by the IBM developers and S/390's service planner. Speakers from Sterling Software will also discuss both essential systems management and advanced use of mainframes with web applications.

9:15 AM - TCP/IP for VM Update

TCP/IP is a critical part of any system's connection to the outside world. VM is no exception. Come hear about the version of TCP/IP that is included with VM/ESA Version 2 Release 3. Significant changes have been made to ordering, installation, configuration, and function. This is a "must see" session for anyone who plans to use TCP/IP with VM/ESA Version 2 Release 3.
10:40 AM - The RSCS Server for Seamless Print Solutions

RSCS and TCP/IP share responsibility for providing LPR and LPD operations. RSCS is now poised to assume the bulk of that responsibility so end users need not be concerned about printing their data in a real time environment with shared resources. Come hear what RSCS has to offer and how it can provide a solution for your IS needs.
This discussion will provide information on the RSCS that is being made available with APAR VM61374 which complements the new TCP/IP feature of VM/ESA Version 2 Release 3. Learn about the advantages of enabling the full RSCS product that is now included with VM/ESA Version 2 Release 3 versus the RSCS function that is provided for free.
A description of the complete RSCS product will be provided with an emphasis on the new TCP/IP feature as the main topic. The TCP/IP LPRSET and LPR commands provided with the new functional level will also be discussed as to their relationship to the RSCS server.
1:00 PM - Trends in VM Systems Management and DB2 Administration

While the usage of VM is increasing in certain areas, the number personnel who are knowledgeable in VM is decreasing. A similar trend is also occurring in DB2 administration. This presentation discusses these and other trends and how they affect your data center. Additionally, we will discuss how Sterling Software's products may be beneficial in addressing these issues.

The vast majority of your organization's information resides on mainframe systems. Using Web technology, you can Web-enable and Web-enhance mainframe applications and thereby make mainframe data more accessible and easier to use. But what security risks do you take when you do this? Can you guarantee the security of mainframe data and other data that flows on your organization's intranet? Consider these questions: * If you are prompted to enter a mainframe userid and password on your browser, how can you be sure that no one can intercept the userid and password and use them to gain access to your mainframe? * Can a mainframe Web server serve a confidential report and guarantee that no one but the intended audience can view it?
This presentation provides answers to these and other questions by exploring Web security issues and options, including Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) support, for assuring privacy and data integrity.
3:50 PM - S/390 Service Update Facility

S/390 Service Update Facility (SUF) is an Internet-based S/390 software service tool that makes ordering and receiving VM, VSE, and OS/390 software service quick and easy. SUF allows systems programmers to order both corrective and preventive service via the Internet. Corrective and preventive service for VM and OS/390 can be delivered via the Internet or via standard physical media delivery. Where available, Advanced Digital Delivery (satellite) delivery is also an option. Currently, VSE corrective service may also be delivered via the Internet or physical delivery. However, VSE preventive service (i.e. system refresh) can only be delivered via physical delivery. A common GUI interface is provided via the SUF Customer Application Server. This workstation server may support multiple systems programmers supporting multiple S/390 servers. OS/390, VM and VSE servers can be attached to a single workstation server simultaneously.

Alan Altmark joined IBM in 1982 as a member of CMS Development, working on CMS internals, GCS, and the CMS Shared File System. In 1987 he transferred to VM System Test, with an emphasis on native, SNA, and TCP/IP communications. In addition to his activities as a tester, he is also an active designer and developer of TCP/IP functions. Alan has been the IBM Liason to MVMUA for many years.

John Marsh joined IBM in 1969 in Endicott NY. He started as a development programmer for the DOS platform rewriting the Librarian Maintenance program. After assisting in the transfer of the DOS product to Europe, he took on new responsiblity of writing the TASK Termination logic for the VS1 platform. He then worked on the VS1 Remote Entry System and Remote Terminal Access Method (VS1 RES/RTAM). There he assumed responsibility for developing and supporting that product. He was then given the assignment of supporting a communication product for CP67 platform. This product was later enhanced and provided as a PRPQ to the VM platform. This PRPQ grew into what is now called RSCS. John has been involved with this RSCS ever since. His most current assignment was to provide a seamless solution to LPR/LPD operations on the VM/ESA platform between the TCP/IP and RSCS servers.

Ted Posner joined IBM in 1978. He has worked in a variety of areas related to S/390 software development, distribution, support, including VM System & Performance Test and VM & MVS Software Manufacturing. He is currently the OS/390 the Service Planner, but has responsibility for the S/390 Service Update Facility across all three S/390 operating systems.
