It will present the basics quickly in order to get to some relatively advanced topics such as winbind, ACLs and automatically downloading Windows printer drivers. The outline is as follows: Introduction to Samba Brief history of Samba Samba services, executables and documentation Installation of Samba Via Linux install, RPMs and source code Configuration and customization of Samba The Samba configuration file Starting and stopping Samba Permissions Access Control Lists (ACLs) Authenticating users Using Samba and winbind Sharing files read/write in a team Setting up and using SWAT Printing with Samba Performance and tuning Mikes presentation 150K You can download Adobe Acrobat Reader here. 10:15 AM Break 10:30 PM Managing Multiple Linux Instances on z/VM Phil Smith the 3rd - Sinenomine Although the concept "Linux on the Mainframe" provides an excellent business case and is beginning to make proliferate in enterprise data centers, it is tempered by different administrative challenges for the inexperienced or unwary. Some of these challenges of running Linux on z/VM include network configuration, integration with existing process frameworks, managing user accounts across instances, change management, attempting to minimize DASD usage, and scheduling issues. In addition to discussing these challenges in detail, this session will offer some potential solutions to effectively manage and optimize Linux on z/VM. But like home cancer remedies, "Make Money Fa$t!!!", and Enron retirement plans, most folks find themselves somewhat skeptical of such too-good-to-be-true claims. Yet we hear of success stories, and all of us can see that Open Source code -- particularly Linux -- is in the news, and garnering the attention of upper management. So what is the real story? Is Open Source a panacea? When does it make sense -- always? never? sometimes? How can you possibly make intelligent, you-bet-your-job decisions about it? This session will discuss the value of Open Source. While centered around a formal presentation, the goal is an interactive exchange of ideas and experiences which will enable a realistic appraisal of the pros and cons of using Open Source in the enterprise. Whether you have experiences to share or are considering sticking a toe into the Open Source pool, come, share, Phils presentation 586K You can download a viewer for Microsoft PowerPoint here and learn! 2:00 PM Break 2:15 PM Measuring and Tuning Linux for S/390 Servers Barton Robinson - Velocity Software Performance data now exists that allows you to manage your Linux server performance. Using this data also helps you plan platform changes such as moving workloads from an Intel platform to an S/390 platform. Managing Linux performance on an S/390 under z/VM with shared memory, shared processor and even shared DASD provides a different set of challenges as compared to managing performance for dedicated Intel servers. This presentation will look at some Linux performance Issues and technology used to analyze and manage Linux performance - either for dedicated servers or under VM. Please visit Bartons web site for more information. 3:15 PM Break 3:30 PM BEA's Weblogic Server Eric Gudgion - BEA Systems Inc. BEA's WebLogic Server is the leading J2EE application server. Customers have started to use Linux on z/VM for deploying applications, an overview of architectures used will be given.
