Better late than never! The wild weather this winter and some scheduling conflicts made it impossible to have our normal January meeting this year. However, MVMUA 90 has finally be scheduled for February 26 at Merrill Lynch.
We have a really packed schedule this time around, so please try and arrive promptly at 9:00 AM.
The winter MVMUA meetings have traditionally been the most exciting gatherings of the year and this one is no exception. As we embark on our 22nd year, we have tried to gather some of the people most involved in the future development of VM. First of all, we will have a demonstration of the PC Server/390 (also known as a server 500). This device functions like a S/390 mainframe and is capable of running VM or MVS, but is no larger than a standard PC server. We will also have the introduction of a new, commercially available, VM/CMS Web server, which also runs well on a PC Server/390. One of our favorite speakers and master plumber, Melinda Varian will also be on hand to continue her series of presentations on exploiting CMS Pipelines. (Is there anything about Pipes that she doesn't know?) Finally, but not least, there will be a general session with one of IBM's managers in charge of VM about the "state of VM" and its future directions. It should be an exciting meeting.

9:15 AM - VM/ESA and the PC Server 500 System/390

IBM's PC Server 500 System/390 is a combination of advanced enterprise PC Server technology and a System/390 Microprocessor Complex. (The S/390 Microprocessor Complex is sometimes known as "P/390" for Processor/390.) Announced as a solution offering from IBM, the combination of these technologies has features that are highly desirable for enterprise, client/server and software development computing. With OS/2 and VM/ESA within one server, IBM has brought together the best of both worlds. This session will have an overview of the technology implementation with an emphasis on VM/ESA's unique capabilities on this platform such as PIPELINE stages and the ability to issue OS/2 commands from CMS.
11:30 AM - Streamlining Your Pipelines

This session will present several case studies in refining CMS Pipelines applications to optimize their performance. It will also introduce the use of the Rita pipeline profiler, which is being distributed with VM/ESA Version 2.
1:30 PM - Introducing EnterpriseWeb, Web Server for VM/CMS Speaker: Brian Reaves, President, Beyond Software
EnterpriseWeb is a World-Wide-Web server that runs under the VM/CMS operating system. It uses the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and functions similarly to other servers such as NCSA httpd or Netscape's Netsite. EnterpriseWeb features take advantage of the power of VM. EnterpriseWeb can be used to serve HTML documents. More importantly, EnterpriseWeb may be used to link your existing mainframe applications via Web CGI scripts using REXX, and give them a graphical display on all client/server desktops.
EnterpriseWeb incorporates the technology of Webshare, the shareware web server for VM/CMS operating systems. Beyond Software Incorporated has added to the imp ressive capabilities of this program to provide: commercial support, faster performance, and added many Internet-standard web server features.
3:10 PM - VM/ESA Reliable Value Today and Tomorrow

Today is a key moment in VM's evolution, with the addition of VM/ESA Version 2 Release 1's new functions: OpenEdition, DCE, dynamic configuration and more. This session will describe the ways that IBM's VM development labs views VM's value, now and in the future, for reliable, low cost, effective computing.

Gary Eheman is a Senior Technical Support Representative with IBM's PC Server S/390 Competency Center in Atlanta, Ga. Prior to joining the PC Server organization, he supported VM/ESA for IBM in the southeast United States on all platforms as a technical market support representative.
