9:15 AM David Sklar - PHP Cookbook (on Linux) - O'Reilly
PHP, a reliable, popular web programming language,
is a powerful cross-platform open-source tool.
PHP is currently used by Yahoo!, the US Census Bureau,
and over twelve million Internet domains.
It provides robust encryption, presents content in
different languages,
and generates dynamic, customized graphics.
Flexible and simple to use, PHP runs on Unix, Windows,
and Macintosh platforms and integrates with web servers
such as Apache, IIS, Netscape iPlanet, and AOLServer.
PHP supports approximately 20 databases, including Oracle,
DB2, and MySQL. PHP syntax incorporates the best features
of Perl and C, and is easy for both newcomers and
experienced programmers to learn quickly.
This talk gives an overview of PHP's syntax and capabilities
to provide attendees with the information they need to
decide how to use PHP in their own web development projects
(This book from O'Reilly will
be given out to all attendees)

10:30 AM John Hall - SafeSoftware - Planning for the Worst
- Disaster Recovery for z/VM & Linux/390
The emergence of Linux/390 on z/VM has brought new interest
to the z/VM platform. One of the first tools you need
when deploying Linux on the mainframe is a reliable disaster
recovery solution. Historically, z/VM installations have
used expensive vendor solutions or complicated and difficult
to maintain DDR implementations.
This session covers why you need to have a disaster recovery
plan, what needs to be in it, and options for implementation,
including an overview of Safe Software's newest product:
SafeDR,
a cost effective, turnkey z/VM disaster recovery solution
11:30 AM LUNCH break
There are plenty of places for LUNCH close to IBI
1:00 PM Fred Hitzman - IBI - What is new in FOCUS - or -
(how we broke CMS 19)
1:45 PM Break
2:00 PM Bill Bitner - IBM - z/VM Performance and LINUX
Dean DiTommaso - IBM - z/VM Performance Update
z/VM 4.4.0 is the newest release of VM and offers
many improvements in the area of performance.
This session will discuss various changes which include
improvements in serialization, network options and
performance, and performance management.
Each change will be described along with benchmark data to
help position the benefit. One of the biggest changes
is the introduction of the Performance Toolkit for VM.
This new feature is a combination real time and historical
performance monitor based on the former FCON product.
This session will include a demonstration of the
Performance Toolkit for VM.
3:15 PM Break
3:30 PM Martha McConaghy - Marist College - Linux
- Attack of the Linux Clones at Marist College
In January 2000, Marist College became the first site
outside of IBM to run a Linux system under VM on a
mainframe. What started out as a curiosity has now
become a major initiative for the college. As of
the spring 2003 semester, the Marist Computer Science
and Math division has 4 classes with nearly 100 students,
using Linux on zSeries systems exclusively for their
classwork. As of September 2003, the Marist IT staff
support over 440 Linux servers for these classes.
This presentation will describe the challenges the
Marist staff faced in developing a Linux system that
would support student classwork, but would also be
secure and upgradable. We will describe how we came
up with a special Linux "build" that allows us to
provide new software to students, but also gives the
flexibility to add their own.
Current work going on to address Linux "on-demand"
requirements will also be discussed. In addition,
the presentation will detail work that had been
done to z/VM to accomodate so many Linux guests
for performance, connectivity and security.
4:30 PM Questions and Answers and the IBM give away's.
5:00 PM thank you very much.
