Alex deVries has worked with Linux starting in 1994, maintaining a Linux system for hundreds of students at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada. Since then, he has specialized in the area of Linux on non-Intel architectures--first by contributing to the first Linux distribution for SGI MIPS in 1997, then porting the Linux kernel to Hewlett-Packard's PA-RISC CPU in 1998. As Director of Professional Services for Linuxcare, Alex worked with and educated hardware vendors and enterprise users alike as to how to realize the benefits of Linux. As Linuxcare's Principal Solutions Architect, he has spent the last year developing Levanta: an enterprise software product that deploys manageable Linux instances on z/VM, IBM's virtualization software. Alex holds a Bachelor of Computer Systems Engineering degree from Carleton University.
