MVMUA Meeting 93
Date: November 11, 1996
While we recover from the election, we can (for contrast) have an
instructional and enjoyable MVMUA session. As we've been doing for
the past several meetings, we'll have a focus on Internet technology,
with a strategic session by founding MVMUA member Gabe Goldberg on
why the Internet is so important to all of us, followed by a session
by Vinnie Casale (fresh from his exciting quote in PC Week) on
real-world experience of VM as a highly visible and successful web
server. Not wanting to neglect traditional VM subjects, we'll also
have IBM's Chuck Morse to tell us about the new features of VM/ESA
Version 2 Release 2, and a technical session from David Kreuter of VM
Resources, on how to use CMS's powerful CSL facilities for system and
application programming.
This will be a valuable MVMUA meeting, and
I look forward to seeing you there.
Jeff Savit, President
The MVMUA Board of Directors will report on MVMUA activities and
will entertain questions, suggestions, and comments from the
members.
9:15 AM - How the Internet, World Wide Web, and Technology will
Change Our Work and Communication
The Internet is penetrating popular consciousness,
culture and media. Despite some predictions of an Internet meltdown
and some evaluations of the Internet as a fad (CB radio anyone?),
it's safe to say that the Internet is here and will increasingly
change how knowledge professionals work and communicate. This
presentation contrasts old and new ways in which knowledge
professionals work and communicate, and advocates widespread use
of Web pages for individual and organizational benefits.
COFFEE BREAK: 10:30 to 10:40
10:40 AM - A CICS Application accessed through a VM Webserver.
You've heard all the talk about how beneficial web servers can be for
accessing existing mainframe applications - since CICS is an
important operating system, how about accessing its data or
applications through a web application? In this presentation see a
real example of a CICS application that has been reborn through a VM
webserver and put onto our corporate intranet. Also in this session
are examples of how to setup your VM environment and enable it to
communicate with a CICS region, as well as a live demonstration.
LUNCH: 12:00 to 1:30
1:30 PM - VM/ESA Version 2 Release 2 Overview
In September, IBM announced VM/ESA Version 2 Release 2, the release
of VM/ESA that will provide support for the Year 2000. Chuck Morse of
IBM's Washington Systems Center will describe the Year 2000 changes and
the other new features of this release, including the CMS GUI
enhancements, support for the newly announced IBM CMOS processors,
3590 tape support, REXX Sockets, Opens Systems Adapter support and
much more. He will also provide a summary of recent enhancements to
other VM/ESA products from IBM.
COFFEE BREAK: 3:00 to 3:10
3:10 PM - Creating a Custom Callable Services Library
This presentation will show how to build your own callable service
library with custom routines. CSLs provide a flexible and powerful
mechanism for getting independent services provided to any high level
language. Step by step examples are shown including CMS commands and
source code in REXX, PL/I and assembler.
4:45 PM - Problem Roundtable
The roundtable offers a forum for members to ask questions and bring
up problems pertaining to VM. Answers are often forthcoming from
other members or the IBM MVMUA representatives.
